Red ruffed lemur

Conservation Status: Critically Endangered

The Red Ruffed lemur conservation status is listed as Critically Endangered and is at risk of extinction. A captive breeding programme is in place, and it is hoped that captive-born Red Ruffs can be re-introduced to the wild.

Sensitive to disturbance, the Red Ruff is now only found in the wild in the National Park area of the Masoala peninsula, where they spend most of their time in the trees that make up the primary and secondary rain forests of this area.

It is the largest living lemur, and closely related to the Black and White Ruffed lemur. A herbivore - it is are dependent on threatened rainforests for food. It eats fruit, shoots, leaves and seeds.
