Deer

They are Dear to us!

Galaxy was a lonely reindeer that was due to be moved to another animal park after the sad death of her elderly partner Rolo. On the day she was due to leave, the keepers of Manor House found Galaxy with her newborn baby, Stella!

Galaxy is a gentle reindeer with strong maternal instincts - she is a truly fabulous mother.

Stella, born April 2008, is growing stronger by the day.  She's a favourite amongst the staff here, as her arrival was a surprise and so well timed. We called her Stella, because  is our ‘star’ arrival. Mother and daughter are here to stay - their favourite treats include apples and carrots. Here at the park we have Sika and Muntjac - and spring is in the air when the Sika break out in spots!

If you hear a raspberry being blown - you’ll know there is a Sika nearby - they have  a wide vocal reportoire.

Muntjac (also known as the Barking Deer, for obvious reasons!) are smaller,  standing at around 50cm to the shoulder. The Muntjac population is growing in the UK. Their russetty-ginger coat turns grey-brown in the winter.
The Northern caribou (or reindeer) herds of Canada are in serious decline, with numbers having dropped by almost 75% over twenty years in some herds. In British Columbia there are three major initiatives working towards the long-term stability of these threatened herds.
