Kune kune pig
Just 40 years ago the Kune Kune pig was close to extinction. Having been brought to New Zealand by Maori traders over two hundred years ago, they are of uncertain origin but may have come from Asia or the Polynesian Islands.
Pronounced 'cooney-cooney' (which means 'fat and round' in Maori), the breed was rescued in the late seventies by a handful of New Zealanders, who rounded up all pure bred pigs they could find in their islands. From less than twenty pigs the stud book has grown to number thousands, and the kune kune is now widespread.
