Wallabies and Kangaroos are macropods (‘large footed’). All macropods raise their young in a pouch – ‘joeys’ make their way into the pouch to suckle as soon as they are born.

Pouches are high-tech feeding stations – each equipped with 4 teats, able to produce two types of milk.

At any one time a female may be feeding an ‘in-pouch’ young with one type of milk, and a larger ‘joey’ out of the pouch with a milk suited to it.
