The goat is a ruminant - a chewer of cud. Their four chambered stomach is specially adapted to digest roughage. Oh yes, they produce a lot of wind!

Goats take in large amounts of fibre, whihc they chew and coat with saliva, before swallowing. The 'rumen' then acts as a fermentation chamber, breaking down the chewed up fibre. At regular intervals this food or 'cud' is brought back up into the mouth to be chewed again, and re-swallowed.

If you watch our goats' necks you'll see them swallow and regurgitate - this process is called 'rumination' And yes it makes them burp and gives them terrible bad breath!

The four chambers are called:  1- rumen, 2 - reticulum, 3 - omasum, 4 - abomasum
